Courageous Woman #4: Serena Williams

“The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should raise each other up. Make sure you’re very courageous: Be strong, be extremely kind and above all, be humble.” – Serena Williams

Serena Williams is not just a tennis legend; she is a symbol of strength, perseverance, and resilience. From her meteoric rise in a predominantly white sport to her advocacy for equality and motherhood, Serena’s story is one of breaking barriers and setting new standards — both in sports and in life.

“I’m not going to relax. There’s so much more for me.” – Serena Williams

“I went on the courts with a ball, a racket and hopes. That’s all I had… Never give up because you never know what can happen and who you can inspire.” – Serena Williams

From Compton to Champion

Born in 1981 in Compton, California, Serena began playing tennis with her sister Venus under the guidance of their father, Richard Williams. Compton, known for its tough streets, was an unlikely setting for a tennis prodigy, but Serena’s talent and determination quickly stood out. Her journey was never easy not only the pressures of competition but also racial and gender stereotypes in a sport that was often unwelcoming to women of color.

By the age of 17, Serena won her first Grand Slam title at the 1999 U.S. Open, defeating some of the sport’s biggest names. This was just the beginning of a career that would see her amass an astonishing 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in the Open Era, and four Olympic gold medals.

“As a Black tennis player, I looked different. I sounded different. I dressed differently. I served differently. But when I stepped onto the court, I could compete with anyone.” – Serena Williams

Unmatched Dominance

Serena’s playing style is a testament to her fearlessness. Known for her powerful serves, unrelenting athleticism, and mental fortitude, she redefined how tennis is played. Her ability to bounce back from injuries, setbacks, and losses demonstrated a level of resilience rarely seen in sports. Even as she battled health issues like pulmonary embolisms, she remained at the top of her game, refusing to let adversity dictate her career.

“I don’t have anything to lose. Every single match for me is a bonus… That approach is able to make me stay calm.” – Serena Williams

“You can achieve anything that you set your mind to.” – Serena Williams

More Than a Tennis Player

Serena’s courage extends far beyond the tennis court. She is a fierce advocate for gender pay equality, speaking out about the disparities between men’s and women’s earnings in sports. She’s also been a vocal supporter of racial justice, using her platform to promote diversity and inclusion.

“Everything requires discipline, hard work and dedication, and, most importantly, self-belief.” – Serena Williams

Her journey as a mother added yet another layer to her story. In 2017, she won the Australian Open while pregnant—a feat that stunned the world. After giving birth, she faced life-threatening complications and struggled to return to the top of the sport. Yet, true to form, she fought through and continued to inspire millions as a working mother excelling on the global stage.

“To me, that’s kind of the essence of being Serena: Expecting the best from myself and proving people wrong.” – Serena Williams

A Style Icon and Entrepreneur

Off the court, Serena has made waves as a businesswoman and fashion icon. She launched her own clothing line, S by Serena, and has invested in numerous startups through her venture capital firm, Serena Ventures, focusing on empowering women and minority-owned businesses.

“I love who I am, and I encourage other people to love and embrace who they are. But it definitely wasn’t easy, it took me awhile.” – Serena Williams
