From Idea to Revolution
Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Nzambi Matee witnessed firsthand the overwhelming plastic waste pollution in her city. Frustrated by the lack of effective waste management solutions, she decided to take action. With a background in materials science and a deep commitment to sustainability, she began experimenting with ways to repurpose plastic waste into something useful.
Her breakthrough? Transforming discarded plastics into eco-friendly bricks that are stronger than concrete.
In 2017, she founded Gjenge Makers, a company dedicated to producing affordable, durable construction materials while tackling plastic waste. Today, her company recycles over 500 kilograms of plastic waste daily, providing both environmental and economic benefits.

Nzambi Matee’s plastic bricks are not just an alternative to traditional construction materials—they are a game-changer for sustainable infrastructure.
- Stronger than Concrete: Her bricks are five to seven times stronger than conventional concrete bricks, making them a reliable and long-lasting solution for housing and infrastructure.
- Affordable and Accessible: By using low-cost raw materials (plastic waste), she ensures that her bricks are both cost-effective and widely accessible, particularly for low-income communities.
- Eco-Friendly Impact: Gjenge Makers has repurposed over 50 tons of plastic waste, preventing it from ending up in landfills and oceans.
Through her work, Matee has demonstrated that sustainability and economic opportunity can go hand in hand.
A Global Role Model
Nzambi Matee’s innovation has earned her global recognition. In 2020, she was honored as a United Nations Young Champion of the Earth, an award celebrating individuals tackling the world’s biggest environmental challenges.
